Kalaripayattu · Annual · 7 days
Held every year in Ponniam, Kadirur panchayat, Ponnyathankam is the
world's largest Kalaripayattu festival. The seven-day event begins on
Kumbam 9 of the Malayalam calendar. A mammoth crowd assembles each
year to watch breathtaking feats performed by practitioners from Kalari schools across
Kerala.
The historic duel that inspired it
The festival takes its name from a 16th-century Ankam (duel) at Ponniam
Ezharakandam. The legendary Kalaripayattu grandmaster
Mathiloor Gurukkal (also known as Kadirur Gurukkal) challenged the
celebrated warrior Thacholi Othenan after a quarrel at the
Lokanarkkavu temple festival. The Ankam lasted three days — Kumbham 9, 10, and 11.
Othenan ultimately defeated the Gurukkal using the forbidden technique
Poozhi Kadakan.
Modern revival
In 2015, a group of young people from Ponniam Pullodi — inspired by the Kalari
heritage buried in their own paddy fields — formed Ponniam Keli,
bringing together 18 cultural organisations. They invited the Choorakodi Kalari School
from Vatakara (Thacholi Othenan's own tradition) and two Kadirur-based Kalari schools
descended from Mathiloor Gurukkal to re-enact the same duel at the same location on the
same historic date.
The event was officially named Ponnyathankam in 2016. Kerala
government allocated Rs 8 crore for the festival, recognising it as a premier cultural
heritage project. Warriors wield daggers, sticks, spears, and axes; the event also
features Kalari medicine pavilions, Kalari literature displays, and native art
installations.
The 78-year-old Meenakshi Amma, Padma Shri recipient, has performed
on the Ankathattu (duel arena), drawing international attention to the event.
