Ponnyathankam — World's Largest Kalaripayattu Festival

Kalaripayattu · Annual · 7 days

Held every year in Ponniam, Kadirur panchayat, Ponnyathankam is the world's largest Kalaripayattu festival. The seven-day event begins on Kumbam 9 of the Malayalam calendar. A mammoth crowd assembles each year to watch breathtaking feats performed by practitioners from Kalari schools across Kerala.

The historic duel that inspired it

The festival takes its name from a 16th-century Ankam (duel) at Ponniam Ezharakandam. The legendary Kalaripayattu grandmaster Mathiloor Gurukkal (also known as Kadirur Gurukkal) challenged the celebrated warrior Thacholi Othenan after a quarrel at the Lokanarkkavu temple festival. The Ankam lasted three days — Kumbham 9, 10, and 11. Othenan ultimately defeated the Gurukkal using the forbidden technique Poozhi Kadakan.

Modern revival

In 2015, a group of young people from Ponniam Pullodi — inspired by the Kalari heritage buried in their own paddy fields — formed Ponniam Keli, bringing together 18 cultural organisations. They invited the Choorakodi Kalari School from Vatakara (Thacholi Othenan's own tradition) and two Kadirur-based Kalari schools descended from Mathiloor Gurukkal to re-enact the same duel at the same location on the same historic date.

The event was officially named Ponnyathankam in 2016. Kerala government allocated Rs 8 crore for the festival, recognising it as a premier cultural heritage project. Warriors wield daggers, sticks, spears, and axes; the event also features Kalari medicine pavilions, Kalari literature displays, and native art installations.

The 78-year-old Meenakshi Amma, Padma Shri recipient, has performed on the Ankathattu (duel arena), drawing international attention to the event.

Theyyam, Pooram & living ritual traditions

Ritual Art · North Malabar

Theyyam

One of North Kerala's most spectacular ritual art forms, Theyyam is performed widely in Kadirur and the surrounding panchayat area. The performer embodies a deity through towering headgear (mudi), vivid costume, and 8–10 hours of ceremonial singing. The moment the mudi is placed marks the entry of the divine into the performer — drawing pilgrims and visitors from across Kerala.

Temple Festival

Pooram

Pooram festivals at local temples in the Kadirur area are celebrated with traditional panchavadyam ensembles, caparisoned elephants, fireworks, and processions. They mark key moments in the temple calendar and bring the community together annually.

Martial Art

Kalaripayattu Demonstrations

Beyond Ponnyathankam, the Kalari schools of Kadirur — including those descended from the Mathiloor Gurukkal lineage — hold demonstrations, gurukkal commemorations, and training showcases throughout the year.
